Males form large swarms around dusk, and the females fly into these swarms to mate. Adult mosquitoes will travel anywhere from 1 to 75 miles during their adult lifetimes.

Males live for about a week, feeding on nectar and other sources of sugar. Females require a blood meal for the development of eggs. After obtaining a full blood meal, the female will rest for a few days while the blood is digested and eggs are developed. Adult flying mosquitoes will rest during the day in grass, shrubbery or any place out of direct sunlight. Once the eggs are fully developed, the female lays them and resumes host seeking. Eggs may be either laid on the surface of water, or on damp surfaces, including soil, depending on the type of mosquito. The cycle repeats itself for 1-2 weeks until the female dies.

Warning:

While most mosquitoes are merely nuisances, some can transmit serious diseases such as encephalitis, malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and rocky mountain spotted fever in humans, and heartworm disease in dogs.
